Sprint Heartbreak For Azizul After Keirin High.

A day after he grabbed a historic first ever UCI World Cup gold medal for the country in the keirin, Azizul Hasni Awang fell foul of regulations in Round Two of the series in Melbourne, Australia yesterday.

The 20-year-old qualified fifth fastest for the 200m sprint knock-out stages and made it past Australian Team Toshiba rider Daniel Ellis in the second round.

Asian keirin and 200m sprint champion Azizul then found himself disqualified after beating Frenchman Francois Pervis of the Cofidis team in the second heat of their quarter-final for a lane infringement, having already lost the first heat.

"I went just a little over the line and got disqualified after I won that heat. On power, I know I could have beaten Pervis, so that was really disappointing for me," said Azizul, when contacted.

"Now, we shift focus towards the next round of the World Cup in Beijing (on Jan 16-18). This round has given me confidence. My form has been good, considering we only started our training programme a month ago."

Josiah Ng also competed in the 200m sprint. Having qualified sixth, with a time of 10.644s, he went all the way to the quarter-finals before losing to Australian Jason Niblett and eventually finished fifth after the placing runs.

Fatehah Mustapa delivered a promising outing in this leg of the series, just missing out on a place in the women's keirin final after placing fourth in her second round heat, having done well to win a first round repechage to get there.

The Terengganu-born 19-year-old later won the placing heat to finish seventh.

Fatehah also finished eighth in the 500m time trial with a time of 36.351s, a second and a half slower than gold medallist Willy Kanis of the Netherlands.

The team will give the third round of the UCI World Cup in Cali, Colombia on Dec 11-13 a miss, looking to pick it up in Round Four, when they return to the Laoshan Velodrome in Beijing, the scene of Azizul's explosive Olympic run in August.
